PROJECT INTRODUCTION

Route 2020 is a 15 kilometre extension to Dubai’s Metro network built in preparation of the city’s hosting of Expo 2020.  It comprises seven stations and runs from a new interchange at Nakheel, terminating at the purpose-built Expo exhibition site in the southwest of the city.

ESSURA provided a wide range of Security Consultancy Services during the design, planning and construction phases of the project.

CHALLENGES

There was a crucial requirement to balance the security threats associated with the hosting of a one-time global event with the need to provide a lasting, long term security solution that addressed the different threats associated with the operation of a legacy facility.

SOLUTION

ESSURA undertook an initial Security Threat, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment of all proposed station locations and along the full length of the track. We also reviewed locations on the existing Metro to ensure that the subsequent design of the extension took advantage of lessons learned here. With this information we were then able to develop a Security Design Strategy before undertaking the design (concept and detailed) and ultimately overseeing the installation by the contractor. This included completing testing and commissioning as required.

BENEFITS

Through maintaining an on-site presence during construction we were able to ensure the right advice was provided at the right time. Working closely with all stakeholders allowed multiple project disciplines to seek security input on a variety of topics including landscape design, vehicle circulation and blast mitigation. Security best practice and risk mitigation measures that addressed event and legacy scenarios were integrated into every element of our design.

RIYADH METRO, KSA

Riyadh Metro, currently under construction, comprises 6 metro lines with 84 stations and will cover a length of 176 kilometres.

With challenging conditions in the Majnoon and Basrah regions, Shell prioritised the safety of its employees and contractors. Recognising the risks of road travel, Shell aimed to enhance road safety measures.
