PROJECT INTRODUCTION

ESSURA were appointed by Nikken Sekkei Japan as the lead security consultants for the Camp Nou Project.  Home to one of the most iconic clubs in world football, FC Barcelona’s (FCB) upgrade to its stadium is part of the Espai Barça redevelopment project encompassing the main stadium, the Nou Miniestadi and Nou Palau Blaugrana.  Our scope included Security Threat, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, design (concept, scheme and detailed) and management of the contractor tendering process.  In addition we provided Blast Threat Assessment and Analysis and Void Analysis and Inspection.

CHALLENGES

A key challenge of the project was to implement a world class stadium security solution as part of the upgrade to an existing facility that was to remain operational at all times.

SOLUTION

Following a data gathering phase ESSURA developed a comprehensive, and advanced integrated security system to ensure that the in-house security team were able to monitor the entire stadium complex, identify crowd violence or unauthorised activity, and co-ordinate/control effective response to such incidents. We also undertook a blast threat and risk assessment that considered site topography, potential blast threat locations and types before undertaking extensive loading calculations to simulate the effect of an explosive event and identify recommendations to mitigate any impacts. Our void analysis and inspection combined both desktop and on-site activities.

Through extensive stakeholder engagement and collaboration with all the major engineering disciplines and architectural teams ESSURA’s proposed solution was tailored to the unique requirements of FCB and in particular addressed technology, procedures, processes and regulatory compliance within a risk based approach.
