PROJECT INTRODUCTION

London 2012 needs no introduction – the largest sporting event ever to be staged in the United Kingdom and one that showcased the elite of athletics in a series of venues that left a lasting, positive legacy.  ESSURA was commissioned by the Olympic Security Directorate (OSD) of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to provide expert, professional Security Consultancy Services.  We also advised the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) on perimeter surveillance, access control, Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM), and integrated Security Management Systems (SMS).

CHALLENGES

Hosting an event of this magnitude posed a huge number of interlinked challenges. Security threats were extensive with concerns over terrorism, serious and organised crime, domestic extremism and public disorder being amongst them. Having access to real-time information across such a geographically dispersed set of locations became a critical requirement to help deliver a safe and secure Games.

SOLUTION

ESSURA’s approach involved the development and implementation of specialised security systems for the Main Olympic Park and other venues. We designed a resilient CCTV infrastructure that integrated new and existing feeds, linking the main Olympic Park, MPS Special Operations Rooms (SOR), Forward Control Points (FCP), and Local Borough Councils' systems. In collaboration with the MPS Operational Technology department, we also deployed rapid response mobile surveillance systems to monitor key transport hubs and venue ingress points.

BENEFITS

The security systems designed by ESSURA maximised the reach of the MPS’s CCTV surveillance by integrating new and existing equipment to ensure continuous connectivity and situational awareness. This made a significant contribution to the biggest security operation in Britain for decades and assisted in delivering one of the most successful Olympic Games in modern history.
